The Endocrine Surgery Association Thyroid School was held successfully on September 13, 2012 in cooperation with Rize Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University Faculty of Medicine at the Rize Dedeman Hotel meeting hall. The meeting was opened with a speech by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University President Prof. Dr. Arif Yılmaz. Prof. Dr. Arif Yılmaz presented plaques to Endocrine Surgery Association members Prof. Dr. Yasemin Giles, Prof. Dr. Adnan İşgör and Prof. Dr. Yusuf Bükey and by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Davut Keskin to General Surgery Department member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dursun Ali Şahin. The meeting was attended by 53 participants, with a high level of participation from surrounding cities. The first 3-hour theoretical part of the meeting was moderated by KATÜ Faculty of Medicine Department faculty members Prof. Dr. Adnan Çalık and Prof. Dr. Mithat Kerim Aslan. In this section, Prof. Dr. Yasemin Giles, Prof. Dr. Adnan İşgör and Prof. Dr. Yusuf Bükey gave speeches on the diagnosis and surgical treatment of thyroid nodules, completion thyroidectomy and difficult thyroidectomies. In addition, brief information was given on the recurrent nerve monitoring technique in thyroidectomy. In the afternoon part of the meeting, two thyroidectomy cases were watched live by the participants via satellite broadcast from the operating room to the meeting hall. Both patients who underwent surgery had multinodular goiter, and one had plunging goiter. Near-total thyroidectomy was performed in both cases. During the surgery, the recurrent nerves were found and followed anatomically, and the presence of the recurrent nerve was observed with nerve monitoring. Vessel sealing systems, which provide technical convenience in thyroidectomy, were used. The creation of an interactive discussion environment within the framework of theoretical education and questions from the participants during the surgery allowed for a productive meeting.
